9 minutes ago Richard Baker Yorkshire Google Brantwood Hall in Wakefield is told to improve by a care watchdog Residents of a Wakefield care home faced a "lack of compassion" and were put "at risk of harm", according to a watchdog. Brantwood Hall was told to improve by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) earlier this year, and was placed into special measures. Inspectors revisited the site in July and found the quality of care had "deteriorated even further", prompting the CQC to take further action against owners Roseberry Care Centres "to protect people".
A spokesperson for Roseberry Care Centres said they recognised "the seriousness of the concerns raised" and were working to make "real and sustainable improvements". Brantwood Hall supports 29 residents, some of whom are living with dementia. The care home, which received an overall rating of inadequate, had not received any new admissions since the previous inspection in February due to restrictions in place. 'Lack of effective leadership' A report said the home lacked dementia-friendly resources and activities to meet people's needs and found residents' independence was not consistently supported.
Inspectors found residents' dignity was not always maintained, with one person left without bedding or a pillow, and staff were overheard referring to residents by their room numbers. The CQC said the care home had also failed to address two regulatory breaches in relation to staffing and governance, with inspectors continuing to find a "significant lack" of effective leadership and management. Two further regulatory breaches were identified during July's inspection.
Victoria Marsden, the CQC's deputy director, said: "The quality of care had deteriorated even further, showing a lack of compassion for people living there and putting them at risk of harm. "Concerns were raised during the last inspection regarding someone who was being neglected, isolated and not meaningfully engaged. "At this inspection, the situation was still the same and we were told that they were always in their room, and their mobility had deteriorated." Roseberry Care Centres said it had taken immediate action following July's inspection, including appointing a new manager and introducing additional staff training and activities for residents.
"Kindness and compassionate care are what we aim to provide for every resident, and we are very sorry that the care provided at Brantwood Hall has not met the standards our residents and their families rightly expect and deserve," a spokesperson said.
